Name: Zam Wesell

backsassin
Canon: Star Wars
Age: Adult (exact age unspecified)
Species: Clawdite (though she will become stuck in human form upon arrival)
Canon Point: After her death in Episode II
Condition: Her right arm has been severed just below the elbow.
History: Zam Wesell is a Clawdite shapeshifter from the planet Zolan, born amidst poverty and religious conflict. The Clawdite race was created by accident as a result of genetic engineering on the part of the native Zolanders. The Zolanders then shunned the shapeshifters as an abomination against their Mabari religion, which states that deceit and hiding one’s true face are the worst of sins. Clawdites like Zam were secluded in slums and extensively persecuted by the Zolander majority.
Seeking to escape a life of poverty and oppression, Zam joined the Mabari Order at a young age for the purposes of learning from their warrior-knights, under the guise of being an ordinary Zolander. She showed herself to be a capable fighter, but quickly became disliked among the order for her tendency towards aggression and greed, particularly when she began using her skills to carry out assassination and bounty hunting contracts. Zam denied allegations that she was a heretic, instead calling herself a “progressive.” The final straw came when it was discovered she was a Clawdite and she was officially branded a sinner and heretic.
Fleeing the wrath of the Mabari Order, Zam disguised herself as a human woman, and found work in corporate security. She even attempted to start a family with another Clawdite and had a daughter named Sone, though she eventually left her fledgling family to pursue a life of adventure as a bounty hunter. During her bounty hunting career, she also sent large sums of money to freedom-fighters on Zolan who fought for the emancipation of the Clawdite species.
It was during her career as a bounty hunter that she met the notorious Jango Fett while the latter was on a hunt for the Sith cult leader Komari Vosa. Sensing an opportunity for profit, Zam offered to help Jango with the mission for a cut of the bounty, which he accepted. It ended up being a tumultuous partnership in which both bounty hunters betrayed one another at least once before ultimately reconciling when Zam saved Jango from being tortured and enslaved by Vosa. After this mission, Zam and Jango’s paths would cross more than once, sometimes as partners, sometimes as rivals. Yet, even during jobs where they were technically working against each other, the two always seemed to find time for banter and would try to avoid permanently harming the other, even saving each other’s lives on occasion.
After Jango had a child cloned from his own DNA, Zam became a more personal friend, often taking time to visit Jango and his son, Boba, on Kamino, to the point where Boba began to see her as something of a maternal figure. As Zam herself became closer with Jango, she began to develop a romantic interest in him, though they both agreed that it was in their best interests to keep the relationship platonic. Still, Zam enjoyed flirting with Jango, even if it was only done in a joking manner.
Zam also became something of an unsung hero after learning that Jango had become involved in a terrorist plot against the major hub planet Coruscant, that could potentially have a body count in the billions. In a rare display of morality, she argued fiercely for Jango to sabotage the attack he’d just facilitated, saying, “Executing a mark, someone who probably deserves it anyway, is a lot different than looking the other way while a world dies." When Jango argued that he needed to remain on Kamino with his son, Zam retorted by asking how many “sons” would be killed because of his actions. This argument was enough to convince Jango to finally yield, and he joined Zam in her attempt to stop the terrorist plot.
Zam and Jango’s partnership eventually led to him tasking her with the assassination of Senator Padme Amidala. After one failed attempt involving an explosive trap, Zam attempted to kill the Senator by slipping a pair of venomous kouhuns into her quarters while she slept. However, Senator Amidala was saved by the interference of the Jedi knights Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, who then gave chase to the would-be assassin.
After a lengthy chase through the skyways and streets of downtown Coruscant, the Jedi Anakin Skywalker managed to cut off one of Zam’s arms below the elbow and drag her into an alley for questioning. She initially tried insisting that it was “just a job,” to her captors, but Skywalker continued to press her and Zam’s will began to falter. However, before she could reveal any information, Jango, who had been watching from a nearby rooftop, fired a saberdart into her neck, injecting her with a lethal, but painless toxin, ironically killing her on the planet they had worked together to save. Zam died in seconds, her last words a Huttese curse against her former partner and friend.
Zam’s canon point will be taken directly after her death.
Personality:
Pros:
1. Charismatic: In many ways, Zam is an archetype of a high-charisma character. She prefers to talk her way out of trouble whenever possible and is the first to suggest a diplomatic solution over a more violent one, such as when she talks Jango out of shooting the natives when they return the Infant of Shaa. She is also adept at deception and uses it to impersonate a variety of figures, from slaves to criminals to high-class members of society. There’s also the fact that she befriended Jango—a notoriously cold and solitary bounty hunter—to the point that he trusted her with knowledge of his son and even seemed to enjoy her company.
2. Caring: Though it seems an odd choice of word to describe an amoral bounty hunter, the truth is that Zam is far more caring than her profession would suggest. For example, even after her exile from Zolan, she still cares enough about her planet and her people to continue to send money to support their fight for freedom. She also cares quite a bit for individuals—perhaps too much. For example, even after Jango leaves her for dead during their hunt for Komari Vosa, Zam still returns to save his life, at significant personal risk to herself. Moreover, she also comes to care for Jango’s son, Boba, and goes out of her way to chat and joke around with him whenever they meet. It’s also her caring side that drives her to stop the terrorist attack on Coruscant, and what’s more, to feel perfectly content afterwards even without the reward of money or acclaim.
3. Easy-going: Zam has a thick skin and isn’t easy to anger. These traits are most obvious in her banter with Jango, which often involves Zam flirting and Jango not missing a beat to turn her down with some sort of catty commentary. Rather than react with hurt or offense, Zam is instead entertained by his barbed rebuffs. She’s also quick to laugh (or flirt) off any tension in their more competitive encounters, keeping her cool even when she and Jango have each other at blaster-point.
4. Egalitarian: Perhaps as a result of her own past as a persecuted minority on Zolan, Zam has an oddly egalitarian streak that often sees her sympathize with the underdog and mistrust those with money and power. For one, there’s the fact that she sends much of her earnings back to Zolan to assist with Clawdite liberation movements, but these principles extend far beyond her own species. She’s even shown extending equal treatment to droids, such as in one instance when she insists on tipping a protocol droid with credits for helping her locate a target—much to the droid’s bewilderment since droids are typically treated as property rather than people by the galaxy’s organic population. On the flipside of this, Zam is, by her own admission, uncomfortable dealing with particularly wealthy and powerful clients, and prefers to deal with them indirectly whenever possible.
Cons:
1. Reckless: Zam is a thrill-seeker at heart and has always been attracted to more theatrical, exciting methods of completing a job than the more practical ones. For example, during one job that required capturing a bounty from inside a prison, Jango’s plan was to slip in and out of the facility undetected, while Zam’s involved inciting a prison riot and subduing their target during the confusion. In another exploit, she impersonated a dancing girl and fed her target a live bomb. However, her recklessness could also lead her to careless mistakes, such as when one of her explosives killed the wrong target in Episode II. Her lack of caution also ultimately leads to her own demise, as she brushes off the warning signs about her partnership with Jango—including Jango explicitly telling her that he’d kill her if he ever felt he had to—until it was too late.
2. Callous: Though Zam is caring towards certain people and causes, her job does require a certain degree of callousness and cruelty. She is quick to write off her targets as deserving of their fates without much thought as to the truth of that assumption or the consequences of their deaths. She also doesn’t show much remorse in causing others distress in the pursuit of her quarry. On one occasion, to help Jango get information on a target from a prisoner, Zam impersonates one of the prisoner’s associates and pretends to help him escape, only for Jango to “kill” her in the attempt. Though this is clearly traumatic for the prisoner, Zam doesn’t seem fazed at all and quickly resumes her banter with Jango immediately afterwards. Though Zam certainly has lines she won’t cross, her threshold for ruthlessness is much higher than most other people.
3. Mischievous: Zam likes to get a rise out of people, friends and strangers alike. With Jango, this meant frequently twisting his words into innuendo and teasing him constantly—his own son once remarked that Zam was probably the one person in the galaxy who could tease the infamous Jango Fett without fear of retribution. This also shines through in how she behaves on a hunt, teasing and taunting targets and would-be obstacles into carelessness. Though she knows how to use this playfulness to her advantage, it has just as much potential to get her into trouble, especially when it means Zam isn’t always good at holding her tongue.
Inventory: Mabari armor (including her helmet and veil) and her garotte.
Powers/Abilities: Under normal circumstances, Zam is able to shapeshift due to her Clawdite physiology. She can change not only the color and texture of her skin and flesh, but also her skeletal and muscular configuration, allowing her to take on forms beyond a simple biped.
Upon arriving on the island, Zam will find that she has been transformed into a human. Thus, she will no longer be able to shapeshift, nor will she retain any vestiges of her Clawdite physiology.
